Become a YWCA Volunteer
There are many opportunities to volunteer at YWCA Yakima.
Family Crisis Program
There are two primary ways to volunteer within our Family Crisis Program. The program is in constant need of volunteers to help upkeep the Domestic Violence Shelter. This might include such things as yard work, house work, repair and maintenance, improvement of the interior rooms (painting, furnishings, etc.), and food drives to help keep the kitchen stocked. The second way to volunteer for the Family Crisis Program would be to become a Domestic Violence Volunteer Advocate. Volunteer Advocates require the same level of training that a paid advocate does before coming into contact with clients. There is an initial time investment of 20 hours of mandatory training and an additional 30 hours of mandatory training a year that the YWCA provides. Because of the deeper level of commitment when becoming a Volunteer Advocate, interested parties actually go through an interview process. If you are interested in volunteering for the Family Crisis Program, either fill out the online form or call the YWCA. A representative from the YWCA will be in contact with you to arrange an interview.
Administration Office
The Administration office at the YWCA is in constant need of repairs and maintenance, yard up keep and janitorial services. Interested parties may fill out the online form and a YWCA representative will be in contact with you.
Working Women's Wardrobe
This is a great opportunity for someone who loves fashion and retail. The Working Women's Wardrobe hours are Mondays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Fundraising Events
- Leadership Luncheon - Table captain are needed to host tables of ten, and committee members to help plan the event.
YWCA Board Member
The YWCA Board of Directors is made up of 18-24 volunteers. In order to serve as a Director on the YWCA Board, volunteers must be members of the organization (see Become a Member). If you mark this area of interest on the volunteer form, a board member packet will be sent to you. Please fill out the appropriate forms and return to the YWCA, 818 W. Yakima Avenue., Yakima, WA 98902. Once the packet is received a member of the nomination committee or the CEO will be in contact with you. Board candidates are placed on the ballot that is distributed annually 30 days prior to the annual meeting. They are either voted on via mail or at the annual meeting, which takes place June of every year. On occasion, if an opening becomes available prior to the regular nomination period, board members may be added to the Board of Directors by a vote at a board meeting. The board packet must still be filled out and returned to the YWCA prior to being voted on at the board meeting. Board members may serve for two consecutive terms--terms are for two years. For additional information on becoming a YWCA Board Member, fill out the online form and a board packet will be sent to you explaining the commitment in detail.
